SWMS and safety docs for tilers
Do tilers need a SWMS?
Sometimes. Lifting old floor tiles or cutting into wet area walls in older homes can disturb asbestos, and tiling stairwells, balconies or outside walls off scaffold can mean a fall of more than 2 metres. Those jobs are high risk construction work and need a SWMS before they start.

High risk work that comes up for tilers
These are the high risk construction work categories tilers run into most. If a job includes any of them, a SWMS is needed before the work starts.
| High risk construction work | Where it comes up |
|---|---|
| Disturbing asbestos Work that involves, or is likely to involve, the disturbance of asbestos. | Lifting old floor tiles and cutting into fibro wet area walls in older homes. |
| Falls of more than 2 metres Work that involves a risk of a person falling more than 2 metres. | Stairwells, balconies and outside walls up on scaffold. |
| Energised electrical installations Work that is carried out on or near energised electrical installations or services. | Drilling into walls where live wiring may be. |
| Powered mobile plant moving around Work that is carried out in an area at a workplace in which there is any movement of powered mobile plant. | New builds where trucks, forklifts and other plant move around. |
What we would put in your Trade Pack
The Trade Pack is 5 SWMS covering the jobs you do most: $299 Ready to Go, or $795 Fully Custom, including GST. For tilers, these five are a common starting point. Swap any of them for the work you do most.
- Removing old tiles in older homes
- Cutting tiles and stone (silica dust)
- Waterproofing, adhesives and grouts
- Balconies, stairs and work on scaffold
- Lifting tile boxes and large format tiles
Other docs tilers ask for
- SOPs for set-out, waterproofing checks and handover
- An induction pack for apprentices
- A WHS Starter Kit with incident forms
Worth knowing
Cutting, grinding and drilling tiles and stone with power tools can throw off silica dust. The model WHS laws have their own rules for processing materials that contain at least 1% crystalline silica: you assess whether the work is high risk and, if it is, you need a silica risk control plan or a SWMS that covers it. Engineered stone benchtops, panels and slabs can no longer be cut or installed, apart from narrow exceptions such as removing or repairing what is already there.
