SWMS and safety docs for air-con and refrigeration techs

Do air-con and refrigeration techs need a SWMS?

For installs, often. Putting units on roofs, running ducting inside enclosed roof cavities, working in operating cool rooms, and working on or near refrigerant lines or live electrical services are all high risk construction work. A routine service or repair is usually minor work that is not construction work, so it does not need a SWMS.

High risk work that comes up for air-con and refrigeration techs

These are the high risk construction work categories air-con and refrigeration techs run into most. If a job includes any of them, a SWMS is needed before the work starts.

What we would put in your Trade Pack

The Trade Pack is 5 SWMS covering the jobs you do most: $299 Ready to Go, or $795 Fully Custom, including GST. For air-con and refrigeration techs, these five are a common starting point. Swap any of them for the work you do most.

  1. Roof and height work for condensers and coolers
  2. Ducted installs in hot roof spaces
  3. Refrigerant handling and recovery
  4. Brazing and hot work
  5. Cool room and freezer work

Other docs air-con and refrigeration techs ask for

  • SOPs for installs, commissioning and handover
  • An induction pack for apprentices
  • A staff handbook once you take on another tech

Worth knowing

Safe Work Australia lists servicing or repairing an air-conditioning system as an example of minor work that is not construction work, as long as it needs little or no setting up of the work area. The more setting up a job needs, the more likely it is construction work. A new install usually is, and the high risk parts of it need a SWMS.
