SWMS and safety docs for painters
Do painters need a SWMS?
Often. Painting from scaffold, a boom lift or a ladder with a fall of more than 2 metres is high risk construction work, and so is spraying in an enclosed area where the atmosphere could be flammable. Those jobs need a SWMS before they start.
High risk work that comes up for painters
These are the high risk construction work categories painters run into most. If a job includes any of them, a SWMS is needed before the work starts.
| High risk construction work | Where it comes up |
|---|---|
| Falls of more than 2 metres Work that involves a risk of a person falling more than 2 metres. | Two storey exteriors, stairwells, high ceilings and eaves. |
| Contaminated or flammable atmospheres Work that is carried out in an area that may have a contaminated or flammable atmosphere. | Spraying solvent-based paint in rooms or tanks with poor airflow. |
| Next to roads or other traffic Work that is carried out on, in or adjacent to a road, railway, shipping lane or other traffic corridor that is in use by traffic other than pedestrians. | Commercial jobs and line marking next to roads or car parks in use. |
| Powered mobile plant moving around Work that is carried out in an area at a workplace in which there is any movement of powered mobile plant. | Sites with forklifts, trucks or other plant moving around. |
What we would put in your Trade Pack
The Trade Pack is 5 SWMS covering the jobs you do most: $299 Ready to Go, or $795 Fully Custom, including GST. For painters, these five are a common starting point. Swap any of them for the work you do most.
- Ladders, trestles and scaffold
- Boom and scissor lift work
- Spray painting and solvents
- Pressure washing and surface prep
- Older homes with lead paint
Other docs painters ask for
- SOPs for surface prep, colour sign-off and clean-up
- An induction pack for casual painters
- A staff handbook for a growing crew
Worth knowing
Lead paint in older homes is a real hazard to you and the client. It is not on the high risk construction work list, so the law does not demand a SWMS for it, but plenty of builders will still ask to see how you handle it.
