Safety docs for cleaning businesses

Do cleaning businesses need a SWMS?

Usually not. A SWMS is required before high risk construction work, and routine house, office and commercial cleaning is not listed as construction work. You still have to manage the risks in your business, and written procedures and a proper induction are a good way to show you do.

What cleaning businesses usually need instead

  • A WHS Starter Kit: safety policy, risk register, incident forms and a toolbox talk template
  • SOPs for each type of clean, chemical handling and key and alarm procedures
  • An induction pack and staff handbook for new cleaners

Worth knowing

Builders cleans and work at height are different. If your team works on an active building site, the builder may ask for a SWMS. If you clean at height on a building, check with your state regulator whether that work counts as construction work.
