SWMS and safety docs for roofers
Do roofers need a SWMS?
Almost always. Nearly every roofing job carries a risk of a fall of more than 2 metres, which makes it high risk construction work. Re-roofing older homes can also disturb asbestos. A SWMS has to be in place before that work starts.
High risk work that comes up for roofers
These are the high risk construction work categories roofers run into most. If a job includes any of them, a SWMS is needed before the work starts.
| High risk construction work | Where it comes up |
|---|---|
| Falls of more than 2 metres Work that involves a risk of a person falling more than 2 metres. | Roof edges, brittle and fragile roofing, skylights and box gutters. |
| Disturbing asbestos Work that involves, or is likely to involve, the disturbance of asbestos. | Old fibro and asbestos cement roofs and eaves. |
| Powered mobile plant moving around Work that is carried out in an area at a workplace in which there is any movement of powered mobile plant. | Cranes and hoists lifting sheets onto the roof. |
| Energised electrical installations Work that is carried out on or near energised electrical installations or services. | Overhead power lines near the roof line. |
What we would put in your Trade Pack
The Trade Pack is 5 SWMS covering the jobs you do most: $299 Ready to Go, or $795 Fully Custom, including GST. For roofers, these five are a common starting point. Swap any of them for the work you do most.
- Edge protection, anchors and harness work
- Re-roofing older homes
- Fragile roofs and skylights
- Box gutters and valleys
- Loading sheets by crane or hoist
Other docs roofers ask for
- SOPs for roof inspections and quoting from photos
- An induction pack for labourers
- A WHS Starter Kit with incident forms
Worth knowing
Removing more than 10 square metres of non-friable asbestos, or any friable asbestos, needs an asbestos removal licence on top of the SWMS. We write the SWMS for the work you are licensed to do, and we flag where a licensed removalist is needed.
