SWMS and safety docs for concreters
Do concreters need a SWMS?
Yes, on most pours. Concrete pumps and trucks moving around site, crossovers next to live traffic, footings deeper than 1.5 metres and any tilt-up or precast work are high risk construction work, so a SWMS is needed before the work starts.
High risk work that comes up for concreters
These are the high risk construction work categories concreters run into most. If a job includes any of them, a SWMS is needed before the work starts.
| High risk construction work | Where it comes up |
|---|---|
| Powered mobile plant moving around Work that is carried out in an area at a workplace in which there is any movement of powered mobile plant. | Pumps, agitators, bobcats and trucks on site. |
| Next to roads or other traffic Work that is carried out on, in or adjacent to a road, railway, shipping lane or other traffic corridor that is in use by traffic other than pedestrians. | Crossovers, footpaths and kerbs next to a road in use. |
| Trenches or shafts deeper than 1.5 metres, or tunnels Work that is carried out in or near a shaft or trench with an excavated depth greater than 1.5 metres, or a tunnel. | Deep footings and piers. |
| Tilt-up or precast concrete Work that involves tilt-up or precast concrete. | Tilt-up panels and precast elements. |
| Falls of more than 2 metres Work that involves a risk of a person falling more than 2 metres. | Edges of suspended slabs and formwork decks. |
What we would put in your Trade Pack
The Trade Pack is 5 SWMS covering the jobs you do most: $299 Ready to Go, or $795 Fully Custom, including GST. For concreters, these five are a common starting point. Swap any of them for the work you do most.
- Concrete pumping and placing
- Driveways and crossovers next to traffic
- Footings and deep excavation
- Cutting and grinding (silica dust)
- Formwork and suspended slab edges
Other docs concreters ask for
- SOPs for pour day, curing and saw cutting
- An induction pack for labourers
- A staff handbook for a growing crew
Worth knowing
Saw cutting and grinding concrete creates silica dust. The model WHS laws have their own rules for processing materials that contain crystalline silica: you assess whether the work is high risk and, if it is, you need a silica risk control plan or a SWMS that covers it.
